Champions Shield Report

The 2019 season kicked off with the Champions Shield match between Premier League Champions Real Jameosean and FA Cup Winners Hurricane Harriers. In fact, it was Real Jameosean that Hurricane beat in the final to win that trophy last season.

Norman House and Ken Atkinson picked strong sides, with both having to cope with two suspensions each. Ken opted for a 433-support formation, with Volland up front, supported by the talented Isco and Eriksen. Real, maybe mindful of their FA cup defeat, settled for a balanced 442-defensive formation, with Messi and Salah up top, supported by Hazard as the number 10.

For the whole of the first half, Hurricane, with Koscielny and Martinez at CB and Fernandinho as DM, kept Messi and Salah quiet, if not anonymous. However, they couldnt cope with the mercurial Eden Hazard. He dribbled into the box on 18 mins and finished with aplomb, past the helpless Lloris.

It got worse for Harriers late in the first half, when Ceballos handballed just outside the box; Hazard struck and Lloris parried - unfortunately straight to Thiago, who made it 2-0 for Real.

Hurricane had been under the cosh in the first half; however, they found some relief on 62 mins. Eriksens free-kick after a Pogba foul, was blocked, but David Luiz was penalised on the follow up and this time Eriksen made no mistake, beating De Gea from 20 yards.

The game was opening up at 2-1, but the previously well controlled Messi and Salah were now finding space, as Harriers sough an equaliser. Messi dribbled into the box and finished easily and then Salah made his mark three minutes later, with a 25-yard strike, to put Real 4-1 up.

The match was really over. Both teams had half-chances, but nothing really ensued, until Fernandinho received the first yellow card of the match, on 88 mins. This seemed to annoy Rugani, who rampaged forward from centre back, had one shot blocked, but a few seconds later struck home from short range, to make it 5-1 to Jameosean. A rare goal for the defender, he removed his shirt, but only received a warning, rather than the customary yellow card.

The match finished Real Jameosean 5-1 Hurricane Harriers.

Both teams will have been pleased with avoiding injuries and a raft of cards before the season proper and had a chance to brush away the cobwebs of 2018.
