Finals Day 2019 - REPORT

The first final was the League 1 play-off Final pitting Lesley Atkinson and her All Saints United against Robin Slade and Northridge Cormorants for a place in the Premier League in 2020.

Rashford put Cormorants ahead on 36 mins and with time running out it looked increasingly as though that would be a winner. However, with 2 mins left, a free kick on the right was heading in at the far post with a towering leap by sub. Demarai Gray & the Northridge heads discernibly dropped. No goals ensued in extra-time and so to penalties. Although Rashford converted for Northridge and ASU missed their first penalty, Cormorants could only muster one more conversion and it was Saints who won 3-2 and therefore promotion.

The League 2 Play-off final also featured Lesley Atkinson, with her Yelsel Nosnikta side facing James House and Blackwater. Blackwater never really got going and they trailed on 19 mins via Mitrovic. A rather unfortunate own goal on 55 mins when the ball bounced of the post and then keeper Rui Patricio into the Blackwater net, put Yelsel 2 up and that was that. 2-0 to Nosnikta and a second promotion for Lesley.

The League Cup Final featured the same two teams as the League 1 play-off Final and again it was Northridge who took the lead, through Sigurdsson on 42 mins. Lightning was again to strike twice though, as All Saints left it even later, the 90th minute, to equalise, a stunning 20-yard effort by Vazquez. With time running out in extra-time, another penalty shoot-out loomed, when Rashford on 119 mins broke through Saints high line and ran through unopposed to fire Cormorants into the lead, 2-1. There was hardly time for Saints to kick off and so revenge for missing out on promotion for Robin.

The FA Plate Final featured Lesley again (her 4th final of the day) with her Inter Normania side facing fellow Premier mid-table side, Treverton, managed by Stewart Andrews. Treverton went ahead on 21 mins through Immobile and in what was a very lacklustre performance, Inter never looked like coming back and it was Stewart who won the day 1-0; his first trophy in MicroCoach.

In the Paper Orchid Cup Final, another two Premier sides featured. Springfield Lyons, managed by Niall Noonan and VT Turks, managed by Gary Goodson. Both managers seeking their first trophy in MicroCoach. Springfield dominated for long periods but struggled to put the ball in the net, that was until Icardi crashed home the opener on 71 mins. In truth, he could have scored 4 or 5 but in the end, that goal was enough to secure a 1-0 win and the trophy. Turks struggled to break down the Lyons defence, with Smalling imperious at the back.

In a repeat of the 2018 FA Cup Final, Ken Atkinson and Premier League runners-up Hurricane Harriers took on Norman House and Real Jameosean, Premier League winners. Last season, Harriers came out on top and they started very well, threatening to score on a couple of occasions in the first 20 mins. After that though it as all Jameosean as shots rained down on the Hurricane goal. It was no surprise when Firmino gave Real the lead on 71 mins and what a strike it was. Harriers had no answer and the trophy went to Real, 1-0.

In the UEFA Cup Final, Don Davern and Gainsborough Hamlet faced unmanaged European side, Sevilorang. In the first half, Sevilorang dominated possession but did little with it as Hamlet had all the chances and should have been further ahead than 1-0. Dybala with a superb 25-yard free-kick giving them the lead on 42 mins.

More chances came and went for Hamlet in the 2nd half and they were made to pay when Banegas free-kick on 73 mins matched Dybala and his earlier effort. 1-1 and extra-time looked inevitable when terrific control and a short-range volley by Ben Yedders saw the Spaniards lead 2-1 on 90 mins. No way back for Gainsborough, a disappointing end to a good season for Don Davern.

In the EuroCup Final, it was Real Jameosean taking on the might of Mancunian City. Real again started a little slowly, but in their first meaningful attack on 14 mins, Salah broke through in familiar style to crash home the opener for Real. Mancunian City had a couple of good first-half chances to equalise, but they were spurned. As the 2nd half progressed, Jameosean completely dominated and the only surprise was that they did not increase their lead. 1-0 it finished and a League, FA Cup & EuroCup treble haul for Real Jameosean.
